Naples Case Study
More than 800 Modern Ages tuff caves used to build the city centre, 3000 water cisterns, 180 km of aqueducts and tunnels, catacombs, cemeteries, tombs, air-raid shelters, partially used as touristic attraction and partially reconverted. UNESCO List 1995 (cultural). Area: Rione Sanità – symbol of the poorest, most degraded character of Naples and the widespread presence of Camorra – attracted volunteer and humanitarian efforts for years in support of local population. Scale: Metropolitan city of Naples (3,1 M inh). Projects: “Napoli rione Sanità: una porta verso il futuro”. Funding: Public, private.
