The Municipality of Camerano is located in the Province of Ancona, within the Marche Region of central Italy. The town lies approximately 10 kilometres south‑east of the city of Ancona and borders the municipalities of Castelfidardo, Osimo, Sirolo and Ancona, placing it in a strategic position between the Adriatic coast and the inland territories. 

The hypogean system of Camerano is a paradigmatic example of stratified underground cultural heritage. Often described as a “hidden city” due to the scarcity of documentary sources concerning its origins and historical development, the site occupies a liminal position between historically verified knowledge and interpretative hypotheses. 

The underground caves develop vertically to an estimated depth of at least 30 metres, offering a rare opportunity to observe, in a single place, a complete sequence of sedimentary layers formed over very long periods of time. Thanks to their underground nature, these geological formations have been preserved exceptionally well, making the caves of Camerano a unique natural and cultural environment, where history, geology, and human activity intersect. This condition makes their legacy complex yet compelling and highlights the need for integrated approaches that move beyond material conservation alone, combining historical, archaeological, environmental, and social perspectives.

Historical Background

Among the hypotheses concerning the origin and meaning of the name Camerano is its association with the idea of a sheltered place, linked to the presence of natural caves offering protection and refuge. Establishing a precise date for the origin of the underground system remains difficult. From a documentary and structural perspective, the earliest reliable evidence mainly concerns modifications and adaptations of the hypogean spaces carried out between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, while isolated references attest to the existence and use of underground cavities already in the medieval period, with documentation dating back to 1327

Earlier evidence of human presence in the broader Mount Conero area, which includes the hill on which Camerano stands, dates back much further in time. The most ancient evidence was discovered accidentally in 1973 at the Pantano site, during excavation works for the installation of a RAI television relay station. These findings, consisting of lithic artefacts and organic materials attributed to the Lower Palaeolithic, were dated—using the scientific methods then available—to approximately 100,000 BCE

More recent material evidence documents the first stable human settlements on the hill of present‑day Camerano during the Neolithic period (approximately 7th–4th millennium BCE), marking a significant phase of territorial occupation prior to the protohistoric and historic developments of the area. 

From the 7th to the 11th century, the territory of Ancona—including Camerano—was part of the Byzantine Pentapolis, a strategically contested area between the Papacy and the Germanic emperors. The name of the castle of Camerano appears for the first time in 1177, in the High Middle Ages, identified as part of the county of Osimo and under the diocese of Humana (today Numana). The toponym is also recorded in the Peace of Polverigi of 1202, confirming the strategic relevance of the settlement within regional political dynamics. 

The medieval fortress of Camerano is believed to have stood in the Guasto district, an area traditionally associated with earlier Picene occupation. The stronghold was destroyed by the militias of Fano shortly before the Peace of Polverigi. From 1404, still within the diocese of Humana, Camerano formally entered the jurisdiction of Ancona, marking a new phase in its institutional and territorial history. 

A further decisive phase in the relationship between the town and its underground spaces began in 1797, with the onset of the French occupation. Oral accounts collected among elderly residents describe the caves during this period with almost legendary overtones, recalling them as places of shelter and protection from the turmoil of war. In the decades preceding the Battle of Castelfidardo and the Unification of Italy, the underground spaces were also reputedly used as secret meeting places by members of Masonic and Carbonari circles, engaged in conspiratorial activities against the Papal State. 

On 8 September 1860, the Battle of Castelfidardo took place in the Crocette area, and Camerano was occupied by Piedmontese troops, formally entering the process that led to Italian unification. The strategic and protective role of the caves re‑emerged during the Second World War. Following the German occupation in September 1943, when troops were deployed to secure the nearby Albert Line, Camerano hosted evacuees and refugees, particularly after the first bombing of Ancona in October 1943

The most dramatic episode occurred between 30 June and 18 July 1944, when a large part of the population sought refuge within the underground labyrinth during intense military operations. The inhabitants remained underground until the German retreat to the Gothic Line, after which they returned to their homes on 18 July 1944. In the post‑war period, Camerano experienced a phase of artisanal and industrial growth that contributed to the economic consolidation and social cohesion of the local community, which has remained active and resilient up to the present day.

The following caves and underground environments have been identified through survey campaigns carried out at different times. This list is not exhaustive, as many spaces were originally connected and later separated by walls or collapses: 

  • Grotta Costantini, originally connected to Grotta Mancinforte, from which it was later separated by a masonry diaphragm. 
  • Grotta Mancinforte, whose underground extensions originally developed toward the Borgo and the hypogea beneath the main square. 
  • Grotta Gasparri and Grotta Perugini, accessed from Palazzo Trionfi, formerly connected to Grotta Corraducci
  • Grotta Corraducci, accessible from Casa Donzelli, later isolated by walls from adjacent caves. 
  • Grotta Zolotti and Grotta Burchiani, once considered isolated but in fact forming continuations of the same hypogean network. 
  • Grotta del Cantinone and Grotta Ridolfi (entrance from Via Sant’Apollinare), identified in 1981 and belonging to the same underground complex. 
  • Grotta Giostra, characterised by a now‑closed passage that originally continued toward Grotta del Cantinone and Grotta Ridolfi. 

Due to the absence of continuous written sources, knowledge of the original functions of these caves relies largely on oral tradition. Nevertheless, the main uses of the underground cavities of Camerano can be broadly grouped into four principal functions

First, the caves were used for cult and religious practices, reflecting their role as protected and symbolically charged spaces suitable for ritual activities. Second, parts of the hypogean system were dedicated to water supply, including the collection and management of water resources, which was essential for domestic and productive needs. A third major function was that of refuge, associated with periods of danger and instability. This use is particularly significant in local collective memory, which still recalls episodes of the widespread use of the caves as shelters during the final phase of the Second World War. Finally, the underground spaces were extensively used for the conservation of food and agricultural products, exploiting stable microclimatic conditions to preserve supplies over time. 

Taken together, these multiple and sometimes simultaneous functions help to explain both the complexity of the underground system and the difficulties in assigning precise chronological phases to its development. Over the centuries, the caves evolved in parallel with the town above ground, reinforcing the idea of Camerano as a “subterranean city” closely intertwined with its urban and social history.

The Underground Caves extend beneath the historic centre of Camerano, directly below residential buildings, public spaces, and religious structures. The hypogean network is closely integrated with the town’s urban fabric and reflects the long‑term interaction between underground spaces and surface settlement patterns.

Context and Challenges

Physical and environmental vulnerability. The hypogean spaces are structurally fragile and highly sensitive to microclimatic variations and visitor pressure, requiring constant monitoring. 

  • Accessibility and usability constraints. The morphology and configuration of the caves limit accessibility, particularly for people with reduced mobility. 
  • Governance and knowledge gaps. Fragmented historical documentation and complex ownership patterns hinder integrated management and long‑term planning. 

Key Opportunities 

Integrated and participatory management. The caves offer a strong basis for experimenting with governance models that connect heritage conservation, community engagement, and local development. 

Strategic territorial positioning. Camerano can function as a connecting node between coastal tourism areas and inland cultural and environmental assets, supporting balanced and sustainable tourism. 

Digital and low‑impact valorisation. Interpretation tools, virtual experiences, and digital documentation can enhance access and understanding while reducing physical pressure on the site. 

Living Lab Organisation and Community Engagement

The Underground Caves of Camerano were developed as a Living Lab within the COST Action Underground Built Heritage as Catalyser for Community Valorisation (Underground4Value – CA18110), active from 2019 to 2023. Camerano was officially included as a case study in 2020 and soon emerged as one of the most dynamic experimental contexts of the Action, owing to the extent of its underground system, the commitment of the municipal administration, and the active involvement of the local community. 

The Living Lab was conceived as a space for research‑action and co‑production, aimed at reconnecting underground heritage with the social, cultural, and civic life of the town. Participation was understood not as a consultative add‑on, but as a core methodological principle. Local authorities, citizens, cultural associations, researchers, and international experts were involved throughout the process, contributing to the collective construction of knowledge, values, and future visions for the site. 

Community engagement activities combined qualitative and participatory methods, including socio‑territorial investigations, historical and cartographic analyses, participatory laboratories promoted by the Municipality of Camerano, and international training and design activities developed within the Underground4Value framework. All initiatives were structured according to the Strategic Transition Practice (STP), an adaptive methodology designed to support community empowerment, co‑design, and shared governance in heritage valorisation processes.

Results and Impact

The results of the Camerano Living Lab are primarily observable at the level of processes rather than immediate quantitative outputs. Through the implementation of the Underground4Value project in Camerano, at least three core objectives were effectively pursued and achieved, in line with the scope and tools of the Action.

  • Implementation of the Living Lab and testing of the Strategic Transition Practice (STP). The Camerano case enabled the concrete activation of a Living Lab, serving as a testing ground for the Strategic Transition Practice methodology promoted by Underground4Value. This process was carried out in collaboration with an expert team from the Università Politecnica delle Marche, allowing the STP framework to be applied, observed, and refined in a real territorial and institutional context. 
  • Monitoring and knowledge enhancement of the underground heritage. The project supported innovative forms of documentation and monitoring of the hypogean system, including the use of 3D point‑cloud technologies to improve spatial knowledge of the underground spaces. This technical work was complemented by a parallel mapping of stakeholders’ perspectives through structured interviews, capturing perceptions, values, and expectations related to the underground heritage. 
  • Engagement of local administrations and communities. Several actions were specifically aimed at strengthening the involvement of local decision‑makers and citizens within the Underground4Value framework. These included the implementation of two Short‑Term Scientific Missions (STSMs) funded by the Action, as well as the activation of structured dialogue among institutions to explore and discuss new tools for local planning and governance related to underground built heritage.

The “Paros Ancient Marble Quarries Park” Non-profit Organisation is proceeding with the preparation and promotion and, in many cases the actual implementation, of actions studies and projects that are necessary for the protection of the monument of the Ancient Quarries and the enhancement of the archaeological site, and contribute to the creation of an archaeological and cultural park and the promotion of the cultural heritage of the Ancient Quarries.
